What is the Horizons Summer Program?
Horizons is a six-week summer enrichment program of academic, cultural and recreational activities for students in Grades pre-K through 8 who live in Dedham, Boston and surrounding communities. Our program begins at 8:30 a.m. with breakfast and ends at 3:00. Students begin the day in academic classes that include reading, math, and science. Classes are challenging and fun and utilize a project-based learning theme to unify lessons. A nutritious lunch is provided every day and afternoons are filled with swimming, tennis, music and elective activities such as cooking, art, coding and basketball. Each class takes a field trip once a week.
Who is eligible to attend?
Children must currently be in prekindergarten or kindergarten (K1 or K2). The family must meet the state of Massachusetts income guidelines and qualify for free or reduced price meals in the public school system. Applicants must be recommended by a school social worker or guidance counselor (a written recommendation must accompany each application). Acceptance or denial is at the discretion of the admissions committee and will be based upon a number of factors which may change as the program evolves.
When will we receive admissions notification from Horizons?
The admissions committee meets in March and you will be notified in late March if we have an available place for your child. The program has limited slots available each year so we regret that we cannot accept all applicants. As a result, sending an application does not ensure a place for your child.
What is the cost for the program?
Horizons is a scholarship program valued at $3,200 per student and the only fee for families is a $50 registration fee. You pay this fee only if your child is accepted into the program. There is no cost to apply.
Where is the program held?
The program takes place on the campus of the Dedham Country Day School in Dedham, MA. There are weekly field trips for the students to area cultural and natural attractions, such as the New England Aquarium, Franklin Park Zoo, Blue Hills, and the Urban Farm.
What are the dates and hours of the Horizons Summer Program?
The program runs for six weeks starting in late June and ending the first or second week in August. Children attend Horizons Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. There is an extended day program until 5:30 pm, which does not include transportation.
Do you provide transportation?
Yes. School buses pick up children at a designated bus stop near their homes and deliver them to Dedham Country Day School and leave DCD at 3:00pm. There is no transportation for the extended day program.
What is the attendance policy?
We have a very firm no vacation policy, and children are expected to be here every day for the full six weeks. If you take your child on vacation during the program or he/she has unexcused absences, he or she will not be invited to return the following summer.
